Academic Performance and Academic Progress

Washington International University has no attendance requirements due to the fact that this is a distance learning institution. However, we measure a student’s performance via examinations submitted for grading to our institution. In this way WIU confirms that the student succeeds only by meeting the requirements.

Student achievement is comparable to that in traditional programs. Students should demonstrate their knowledge and academic achievement through tests. The WIU grading system considers A through D as passing grades, and F as a failing grade. Students are considered to be in good academic standing if they are currently enrolled and they are eligible to take the next subject.

Students are expected to maintain a high level of academic performance. Assistance is provided in an attempt to help students maintain satisfactory academic progress. A student who does not maintain satisfactory academic progress can be dismissed from the institution. Students who are concerned about their academic performance should contact our faculty members to get assistance with the subject that concerns them. Academic progress is measured at the end of each term. When a student fails to meet the standards for satisfactory academic progress, he or she may be placed on probation. Probation is limited to three courses per term. To be removed from probation, a student must retain satisfactory academic progress by meeting or exceeding the minimum requirements for continuous enrollment.

How Long to Complete the Program?

Washington International University considers the date at which the student receives his or her course package as the first day of class. From then, on the student has a maximum of, six years to complete the ASB program, eight years to complete the BBA program, and twelve months to complete the MBA program.

What About Exams?

Students must submit examinations to be graded for each course in the term. If the student fails, he or she must retake the exam two weeks after the first attempt. If the student fails again, he or she must retake the exam but must wait four weeks before trying again for the final attempt. The grade from the last attempt will show on the student's official transcripts. Students will not receive any more courses for the rest of the term until they have satisfactorily completed the courses that were already assigned to them.

If the student fails the last attempt, our instructors will contact the student and review the course. After reviewing the course details, the student will take an examination that will not count toward the completion of the degree. This exam will only give the student the chance to understand the course and be able and ready to take the following course. WIU will maintain the student's examinations in their files as a proof of their academic performance and progress.

The Door is Open

We encourage our students to contact us whenever an issue arises. Please refer to the Contact Us section for business hours and contact information. During the first month after registration, the instructor will contact the student once a week to check student's performance and answer any questions that the student might have. The interactive communication from our institution between the student and the instructor will continue at least once a month to assure the student's highest performance.

Academic Honesty and Integrity

All WIU students are expected to conduct themselves with the highest academic and ethical standards. Students are expected to be academically honest. Misrepresentation of facts, omissions, or falsifications in any connection with the academic process (including both course work and official documents) are violations of the Academic Honesty and Integrity Policy, hereafter referred to as the Policy. Students are urged to consider that the public value of their education depends on the integrity of the grading system, and that academic dishonesty in any form dilutes the value of those grades.

Simple justice requires, however, that students receive the quality and quantity of academic credit they have earned. Justice of this sort is compatible with the community values and shared experiences on which a liberal education is based.

Student Records

Students have the right to review and copy their records, and can do so at any time by written request or in person. Unauthorized released of student records without a student's written permission is prohibited by law. The Student Records rules and procedure are detailed in the WIU Catalog.

Student financial records can be discussed only with the student, who must provide proper identification.

Grades and Grade Point Averages

Washington International University uses a number-letter system for grading. The letter grade for the course is determined by calculating the average of the course examination grades as two-thirds of the course grade and the proctored examination grade as one-third.

All course-work will be graded using a letter grade system and grade points will be issued depending on the grade received. The following standard is used:

Detailed STRF information are provided in the WIU Catalog.
